Die Blues- und Soul-Sängerin Etta James ist nach Auskunft ihrere Ärztin sterbenskrank. Die 73-Jährige leide an Leukämie, sagte die Ärztin Elaine James der Zeitung “The Press-Enterprise“.
Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins Jan. 25, 1938 in Los Angeles, California, to Dorothy Hawkins. She claimed that her mother told her that her father was a white pool player, Rudolf “Minnesota Fats” Wanderone. She is an American blues, soul, R&B, rock & roll, gospel and jazz singer and songwriter. In the 1950s and 1960s, she had her biggest success as a blues and R&B singer. She is best known for performing “At Last”.
James wurde unter anderem durch ihre Interpretation des Songs “At Last” berühmt. Nach Angaben ihres langjährigen Managers Lupo De Leon leidet sie auch an Hepatitis C und geistigem Verfall.
James gewann vier Grammys und 17 Blues-Auszeichnungen. Der Song “At Last” wurde im Januar 2009 von Beyoncé zur Amtseinführung von US-Präsident Barack Obama angestimmt.
